5 Tips to prevent UTI

Verified by Dr. Vaishali Sakpal Rane (MBBS, DGO Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an illness that can affect any component of the urinary system, involving your kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) develop when bacteria overcome the body's defences in the urinary tract.

A UTI can cause the following symptoms:

  • You experience a searing sensation when you urinate.
  • A strong want to pee, even if little comes out when you do.
  • Pee that is cloudy, black, crimson, or has an unusual odour
  • Tiredness or shakiness
  • Chills or fever are signs that the infection has spread to your kidneys.
  • Back or lower abdominal pain or pressure

So, how can this be prevented? Here are 5 tips to prevent UTI:

  • Keep yourself hydrated: Staying hydrated can help prevent and treat UTIs. Water assists the urinary tract organs in efficiently removing waste from the body while conserving critical minerals and electrolytes. Being hydrated also dilutes urine and accelerates its passage through the system, making it more difficult for germs to access and infect the cells lining the urinary organs.
  • Urinate as needed: Frequent urination can aid in the removal of microorganisms from the urinary system. It also shortens the time bacteria in urine are exposed to cells in the GI tract, lowering the danger of bacteria sticking to and infecting these cells. Urinating as soon as the urge occurs can aid in the prevention and treatment of UTIs.
  • Use probiotics: Beneficial bacteria from the Lactobacillus group produce hydrogen peroxide, a powerful antibacterial agent, in urine, which can help maintain the urinary tract healthy and free of dangerous bacteria. Probiotics can be found in a variety of items that include dairy, are fermented, or both, such as yoghurt, curd, cheese, and much more.
  • Get adequate vitamin C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that aids in immune system function. It has the ability to lower the pH of urine, making bacteria less likely to survive.
  • Maintain proper sexual hygiene: Sexual contact can bring germs and other pathogens into the urinary system. This risk can be reduced by practising proper sexual hygiene. Urinating before and shortly after intercourse, using barrier contraception such as a condom, and many other healthy habits are examples.

These were some tips to prevent UTI , but remember that If you are diagnosed with it, you should consult with your doctor about further treatment.
