Pelvic pain can be caused by a number of diseases or conditions related to the digestive, reproductive or urinary system. Although pelvic pain can occur in both men and women due to a variety of reasons, in women there are some specific conditions that can cause pelvic pain.

Different diseases can cause different types of pelvic pain. It might occur in a small area of the pelvis or in the whole pelvis. The different types of pelvic pain are:

  • a sudden sharp, stabbing pain 
  • pain that comes slowly and is consistent 
  • a dull or heavy pain with a feeling of pressure
  • a twisted kind of feeling with pain
  • a cramping pain which comes in periods 
  • pain that occur only while doing certain activities like exercising, urinating or while having sex

Pelvic pain in women can be caused by some conditions like:

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where there’s a presence of tissue similar to endometrium—(inner lining of the uterus) outside or around the uterus, commonly at ovaries, fallopian tube or the tissues present in the pelvis. It can cause several symptoms like pain while urinating, bowel movements or having sex.

Menstrual cramps

Menstrual cramps are common symptoms occurring during periods. They are not usually a sign of issue until they become very severe and start interfering with daily life. They are felt as throbbing pains in the lower abdomen. 

Mittelschmerz pain

Mittelschmerz pain occurs on one side of the lower abdominal during ovulation. It does happen to most women and usually doesn’t require medical attention.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the reproductive organs in women. It mostly occurs as sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhoea but can also be caused by other reasons.

Uterine fibroids

Fibroids are growth of noncancerous masses that develop in or around the uterus. They can range from small pea size to large bulky masses that enlarge the uterus.

Most of the time they remain undetected until there’s a symptom seen. Symptoms can be pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, bladder problems etc.

Urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections or UTIs can affect the urinary tract, can cause pelvic pain along with many other symptoms. They are usually treated with antibiotics.

Whether acute or chronic, persistent pelvic pain of any kind should be addressed to a doctor to find the root cause. Early diagnosis of pelvic pain can lead to better treatment of the underlying condition.
