Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an excess of one of numerous bacteria occurring naturally in your vagina. "Good" bacteria (lactobacilli) usually outweigh "bad" bacteria (anaerobes). When there are too many anaerobic bacteria in your vagina, they disrupt the natural equilibrium of microorganisms and cause bacterial vaginosis.

The populations of good and bad bacteria that naturally inhabit the vagina become unbalanced, which leads to BV. BV might also raise your chances of contracting Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). This is a uterine, fallopian tube, or ovarian infection.

An imbalance can happen for a variety of causes, including:

Anyone experiencing symptoms of BV should seek basic medical care from a healthcare provider since untreated BV can result in significant problems. BV is a very common infection that occurs when the delicate balance of microorganisms in your vagina becomes disrupted. It may resolve on its own, but you may require antibiotics from your doctor. Keep in mind that BV might reoccur, but there are actions you can take to lower your risk, so its always better to consult a doctor.
