If you are sexually active there are high chances that you must have used birth control pill at least once in your life. You must have thought that birth control pill can only be used for preventing a pregnancy, did you know that birth control pills can also be used to treat a number of female problems other than just preventing pregnancy and can have some really surprising benefits.

There are usually two main types of birth control pills. Combination pills have oestrogen and progestin. Progestin is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, which is naturally present in a woman's body. There are also mini pill available in the market which only contain progestin. 

For birth control, pills aren’t the only contraceptive type, there are other methods like intrauterine devices (IUDs), injections, implants, the patch, and the ring. Most of these methods have benefits other than just birth control. Let’s look at these 5 birth control use other than preventing pregnancy.

Reduces pain during periods

Dysmenorrhea, aka painful periods, is the most common menstrual problem caused by high levels of prostaglandins. As the level of prostaglandins increase  in the lining of the uterus, period cramps occur, and as the lining is shed, the pain slowly decreases. Birth control pill, containing oestrogen and progestin hormones can help in the treatment of dysmenorrhea.

Helps in PCOS management 

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a medical condition which causes irregular or absent periods due to hormonal imbalances. Doctors prescribe birth control pills to manage possible complications of PCOS, one of the complications is uterine cancer. Taking birth control pills can help regulate irregular periods.

PMS and PMDD

PMS or premenstrual syndrome is a variety of signs and symptoms during which women get irritable, angry, or tense around their periods. About 8% of women have a severe version of this condition known as PMDD or Premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Birth control pills can help to manage these symptoms.

Irregular and Heavy Periods

The combination birth control pills can help you regulate your periods. Your doctor can even prescribe a mini or progestin-only pill, that can be taken continuously to lessen or stop the flow.

Acne

Stubborn acne that occur due to hormonal imbalances can be managed by using birth control pills. They can help to lower the level of "male" hormones which can be a reason for acne.
