This question still has mixed opinions of doctors. Breast screening can help in detecting cancer lumps. Getting your breast checked should not be this controversial. 

Not every woman but women with breast cancer history in family should be extra cautious. They should definitely consider starting mammograms. 

Beginning of 20s is a probable age of developing these cancerous lumps, as it is the most common cancer in women in the age group of 15-40. Knowing what your breats look and feel like will make your aware. Feeling changes in your breasts can sometimes be alarming. 

However, some changes can be due to PMS, menstrual periods, ovulation, pregnancy and/or breastfeeding. During these phases your may face tender breasts, pain around the nipple area or swollen breasts. During puberty, some visible changes are also harmless in women.

But avoiding these changes at odd times, such as changes in outline of breast, change in the nipple position, discharge from either or both nipples, or presence of a new lump can be triggering. 

Breast screening is not advised to women in young age. Still there are many ways to keep your breast in check. Presence of a rash, pain that is not related to your period, a lump in your armpit or collarbone area or any irregularity in your nipular area.

Some causes of breast cancer in women 20s:

  • Breast cancer risk is higher in women with a family history (a mother or sister)
  • Having had radiation therapy in the chest (for instance, for lung cancer treatment) 

BRCA mutations differ in women with different causes.  “Young women should be aware of their family history and keep their doctors updated over time as it changes.” says Dr. Andrejeva-Wright.

Research on cancer and its risk factors is still going on. Although there are many lifestyle standards that can help maintain your body in its best state possible.

Doctors recommend women do a BSE(Breast Slef-Examination) quarterly and learn all about their breasts and possible risk factors. Weight gain and excessive alcohol consumption are key factors that put a woman to BRCA risk.
