Common ways you can get STDs

Verified by Dr. Vaishali Sakpal Rane (MBBS, DGO Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are often spread through sexual interaction. Bacteria, viruses, and parasite that cause sexually transmissible illnesses can spread from person to person through blood, sperm, vaginal fluid, and other body fluids.

Nonsexual transmission of these illnesses can occur, for example, from moms to their babies during pregnancy and birth, or through blood transfusions or sharing needles. STDs do not necessarily result in symptoms. It is possible to catch sexually transmitted illnesses from persons who appear completely healthy and may be unaware that they are infected. Anyone who engages in sexual activity is at risk of contracting this virus. Among the most prevalent STDs include gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes, HIV, and many more.

STDs may spread through:

  • direct interaction with a wound or lesion
  • when it comes to pubic lice, close physical touch
  • exposure to infectious agent-containing blood
  • touch with uterine fluid or sperm
  • the exchange of needles

The bacteria or virus involved are found in body fluids such as vaginal secretions, sperm, saliva, and blood. In some situations, a person might develop an STD by coming into close touch with germs or viruses. Use condoms or dental dams to avoid contact with this fluid while oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse. Other STDs, such as herpes, can be transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact, such as oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse. It can spread from the oral to the genitals, such as during oral sex. STDs like Hepatitis and HIV can be transmitted by contact with contaminated blood, such as when sexual encounters have open sores or when individuals use needles.

The optimal treatment option is determined on finding the STD. Treatment can cure the symptoms, keep them from reoccurring, or cure the illness. It is critical to remember that a STD can be transmitted to a companion during therapy. Individuals who are sexually active should be screened on a regular basis. Early identification and treatment can help prevent STDs from spreading and developing problems, some of which can be fatal.
