Debunking 5 Weird Myths about Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is not always about nutrition. Breastfeeding also provides:

  • Comfort
  • Security
  • Emotional bonding

Breastfeeding helps you emotionally bond with the baby. But there have been some myths associated with breastfeeding that needs to be debunked. Here are 5 weird myths about breastfeeding.

1. You can't produce enough milk if you have small breasts:

That's not true, because your breast produces milk through glands and these glands are then surrounded by fat tissue inside the breasts. The more the fat tissue, the larger the breast. The lesser the fat tissue, the smaller the breast. So, the glands are almost the same level in women and therefore, the milk-making capacity is the same.

2. You will not produce milk if you have had a C section:

This is again not true. Lactation begins as soon as your baby is delivered and this is triggered by the detachment of the placenta from the uterus. This will happen irrespective of whether you have had a delivery via C-section or vaginal delivery. Therefore, a woman who has delivered via C-section can very well breastfeed her baby.

3. You can't breastfeed if you are unwell:

Untrue, in fact, a mother should breastfeed if she is unwell. Because her body will create antibodies against the disease or the bacteria and those antibodies will pass on to the baby by the breast milk and will protect the baby as well.

4. Breast milk makes your baby clingy:

No, it does not, in fact, it provides nourishment to your baby and helps your baby grow. Breastfeeding is not all about nutrition, it helps you bond with the baby.

5. You must drink milk to make more milk:

This again is untrue. Having too much milk will only lead to gas issues. However, having a well-balanced diet and a nutritious diet will help you produce more milk.

Drink plenty of water, eat healthy balanced foods, eat all your meals, don't skip anything and eat everything in moderation. That's what is needed.
