Sleep and rest are not the same thing. Even while sleeping, our mind stays awake, and we wake up tired. Our body needs deep sleep to improve memory growth and generate new cells. Poor diet, pain or discomfort, caffeine overdosing, and using the phone right before bed disrupt our sleep.

But do you believe that sleep alone can help us feel fresh and well-rested?

Our mind and body need more than just sleep to reach a state where they are relaxed and able to process stress and burnout.

Burnout is a state of mind and body where it reaches a saturation point and is unable to perform functions due to exertion. In today’s time, people often forget to rest while chasing success and productivity and suffer from burnout. New mothers, working women, and aging women all have one issue, and that is a lack of rest. They often blame their fatigue on a lack of sleep. In reality, their minds also remain averse to rest.

Types of rest

There are 7 types of rest other than just physical rest. Here is a list of the kinds of rest we need to function effectively.

  1. Physical rest: We all know that our body needs quality sleep of 7-8 hours to feel well-rested.A disrupted sleep cycle can lead to fatigue and, eventually, memory loss. Taking naps whenever needed can help improve productivity.

  1. Mental rest: Our mind is always on the go. When we eat, work, sleep, exercise, and study,. Our minds are working all the time. Just like our body, our mind also needs rest. Meditations, therapy, and journaling can help organize our thoughts and provide respite to our minds.

  1. Emotional rest: Expressing our emotional needs and feelings constitutes emotional rest.Talking to your loved ones, a therapist, or documenting your feelings can help with this.

  1. Sensory Rest: This includes our senses. We live in a world of constant stimulation. Due to technology, our attention span has gone for a toss. It can lead to feelings of irritation, anger, and overwhelm. Stimuli like bright lights or crowded and noisy places can cause unrest in our sensory system.

  2. Creative rest - involves taking a break from your tasks to enhance your creativity. An artist or a poet might take time to process information and explore new ideas by traveling, meeting new people, or reading new writing pieces.

  3. Social rest: Humans are social beings, but not everyone can process socialisation the same way. We need to take a rest in solitude to realize our relationships with others and ourselves.

  4. Spiritual rest: This is a different kind of relaxing method where we connect to our higher self through meditation, chanting, or prayer. Some associate this with being religious, but that is not true. One could be using yoga or nature as a medium to connect to the higher consciousness.

These are the seven types of rest our body needs. Not many people are aware of these and often blame their fatigue on physical or mental strength. It takes time to understand each of them and to incorporate them into your life.

Constantly learning about oneself is the only way to find reasons for everything that happens to us.
