Things you should know about vaginal dryness

Normally, the vaginal walls are lubricated with a thin coating of transparent fluid. The hormone oestrogen aids in the maintenance of that fluid and the health, thickness, and elasticity of your vaginal lining.

A decrease in estrogen levels limits the quantity of moisture available. It can occur at any age due to a variety of factors.

It may appear to be a small annoyance. However, a lack of vaginal moisture might have a significant influence on your sexual life. Fortunately, there are various therapies available to alleviate vaginal dryness.

Vaginal dryness is a frequent symptom of menopause, and about one in every three women has it while going through "the shift." Following that, it becomes even more prevalent. It also causes the vagina to become thinner and less stretchy. This is known as vaginal atrophy.

Menopause, however, is not the only event that causes a reduction in estrogen levels. Other factors include:

  • Breastfeeding
  • cigarette smoking
  • chronic stress
  • immune system problems such as Sjögren syndrome.
  • childbirth
  • strenuous exercise
  • several cancer therapies, such as pelvic radiation, hormone therapy, or chemotherapy
  • ovaries surgically removed
  • Douching

Dryness in the vaginal and pelvic areas can be uncomfortable. Burning, reduced libido, discomfort during sexual intercourse, minor bleeding after intercourse, soreness, and vaginal itching can all be symptoms of vaginal dryness.

Vaginal dryness is rarely the result of a major medical issue. However, seek medical attention if the discomfort lasts more than a few days or if it occurs during sexual intercourse. Vaginal dryness, if left untreated, can develop ulcers or cracking in the vaginal tissues.

Vaginal dryness can cause embarrassment. This may deter women from addressing problems with their doctor or spouse, yet the illness is prevalent and affects many women. If you have persistent vaginal dryness, talk to your doctor about it so they can help you discover the correct therapy.
