High blood pressure also known as hypertension is the common condition that affects the arteries of the body. The force of blood push against the arteries is too high. Thus, the hard finds it difficult and has to work harder to pump blood. 

Since blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury, hypertension is the blood pressure reading 130/80 mm Hg or higher. A normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg or lower. Blood pressure higher than 180/120 mm Hg is considered a hypersensitive emergency or crisis.

Causes of hypertension :-

The risk of getting a high blood pressure increases if you:-

  • Are struggling from being overweight.
  • Smoke or drink too much.
  • Are addicted to caffeine based drinks.
  • Have disturbed sleep.
  • Intake excess salt.
  • don’t exercise regularly.
  • Have a diet deficient in vegetables and fruits.
  • Live in a deprived area.
  • Are already a BP patient.
  • Are above 65 and unhealthy.
  • have other health problems like kidney disease, thyroid, diabetes or etc.
  • Take medicines like steroids, contraceptive pills, serotonin, etc.

Hypertension if ignored,not prevented or treated properly can be hazardous.It may lead to the increased risks such as cardiac arrest or heart attack, etc. Some methods of prevention are:-

  • Stop smoking.
  • Restrict the alcohol intake.
  • Limit the salt intake.
  • Add fruits and vegetables to your diet.
  • Lose weight because being overweight might make it difficult for the heart to pump blood. Hence, weight management is very crucial.
  • Be active and exercise regularly. This will better the blood circulation and will also help you to keep healthy thus lowering your blood pressure.
  • Cut down on caffeine products.
  • Go for regular checkup and keep a check on the blood pressure fluctuations.
  • Follow the advice of the doctor properly and take medicines if prescribed timely.
  • Report to your nearest health clinic in case of emergency. 
  • If you see any symptoms or face any relatable problem then get yourself tested as soon as possible.
