A disease that affects you physically and mentally , makes changes in your physical appearance, sometimes even lowers self-esteem, and comes with lots of restrictions. Yes, we are talking about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). And if you are reading this you might be suffering from PCOS or you might know someone suffering from it because it's that common. Did you ever wonder why two decades ago no one ever heard about PCOS and how come 1 in every 10 women is now suffering from PCOS.
Here’s some PCOS symptoms to look for :
1. Irregular periods or no periods at all
2. Acne
4. Hair growth in unwanted parts
5. Difficulty in getting pregnant
6. Weight gain
7. Hormonal imbalance
PCOS is a serious hereditary, hormonal, metabolic and reproductive disease that comes in with lots of gloomy symptoms, and given that it is not curable but manageable, makes it even harder to tackle. Above this , the social beliefs and media representations makes it worse. The so-called slim figure , clear skin, with less hair on the body and more on the head image of a perfect girl, is something that PCOS doesn't believe in. With PCOS comes mood swings, hair fall, excessive hair growth on face and body, severe acne, irregular menstrual cycles , dark patches under skin and problems in getting pregnant . Generally we get worried if our periods are 2 or 3 days late, but for people with PCOS , they sometimes get their periods after months and sometimes no periods at all.
But nobody cares to understand the main problem and everybody will just start slamming you with home remedies.
-It first starts with hair growth and your so-called concerned neighbours and relatives will advise you to undergo hair removal treatments.
-Then comes acne you are again advised to apply anti-acne creams.
-Then you start gaining weight and even if you try you can't lose weight because PCOS won't let you.
- Everyone will poke you for the voice changes
Then you start hating yourself.
But because of whom?
Who said pimples are ugly.
Who said chubby girls are not sexy.
Who said body hair is filthy.
Who said manly voice is not good.
These posters? These media representations? These aunties? These filters?
But what about self-love and self care?
What about your body that needs care?
PCOS is a lifestyle disease. Yes, it can be managed with care, attention and right guidance of a doctor. It is a gentle reminder to take care of yourself and not get stressed . Don’t end up hating yourself because of the negative people around you, instead choose to see through it. Elect on positivity and embrace your flaws. Flaunt your chubby cheeks. Show the world the natural blush and shine you got because of your acne. Exercise, stay healthy, love yourself and keep your health in check under the guidance of a doctor.
I choose to love myself, do you?
