If your underwear gets bleached, you are not alone. The reason is your vaginal discharge. Women often experience different amounts, textures and colours of the vaginal discharge. Today we will be talking about all the possible colours that your vaginal discharge can be and what they mean.Vaginal discharge is very normal and everyone gets a certain amount of discharge.

Let's first understand why we get a discharge. Vagina is a self-cleaning organ and it secretes the vaginal discharge to clean the vagina. So, getting a vaginal discharge is a very normal phenomenon and it’s nothing to worry about.

Given that the  discharge is important for the vagina and vaginal health it can also indicate abnormalities. Here are a few things that tell you if something is wrong.You should see a doctor when your vaginal discharge is accompanied with: 

  • Itching 
  • Burning
  • Funky smell
  • Excessive Discharge
  • No Discharge at all

Discharge is an insight into your health and to examine the discharge you should know what discharge means so let's understand that.

1. Texture: The normal vaginal discharge is sticky and feels like egg white. It becomes thicker around your cycle.If at any time your vaginal discharge starts to look like Dahi or curd, technically called curdy white discharge, run to the doctor as this can indicate a fungal infection.

2. Colour: The discharge usually range from light grey to colourless to creamy white and any other colour is a red sign. 

What are those red flag colours?

  • Red: If your discharge is red it means that you are going to get periods but, if it happens suddenly then it is abnormal. It can indicate an injury. 
  • Brown: Getting a brown discharge is completely normal before your periods. It happens because your blood gets mixed with your discharge. It is only normal if you get it before or after your periods but if it's happening in the middle of your cycle run to the doctor.

  • Green and yellow colour discharge indicates sexually transmitted infection.     

3. Smell: If your vaginal discharge smells like fish that is an ammonia-like odour then it indicates a change in the PH of your vagina this condition is called bacterial vaginosis.
