Here’s what the colour of your period blood means!

The colour of your period blood tells a lot about your health. Let’s look at the  different colours of period blood and try to understand what they actually mean.

1. Brown colour: Your periods arrive, you go to the washroom to check and you find that your period blood is brown in colour. You wonder why your blood is brown. Most of the time, getting brown period blood is absolutely normal. Brown colour can simply mean that your period blood is old.

To understand better, here is an example: Consider you got a stain on your panty and after getting the stain, you just went and checked it. So, what will be the colour of the blood? It can be red right? But, imagine if you didn't check at that time and you check after an hour or 15-30 minutes. Then, the colour of the blood will be brown. This happens because the blood on the panty has reacted with oxygen and hence it becomes brown. Similarly, if the blood in your uterus is old, that means, it has stayed a little longer in your uterus or it has a little more time to come out. Blood can react with the oxygen and become brown. Also, your vagina has an acidic environment so all these factors can make your period blood appear brown or dark brown. Most of the time, you will see this brown discharge at the start or end of your period.

2. Red colour: If your period blood is red, you are getting your periods every month and you are not finding anything suspicious, then you are going good. The bright to dark red colour of period blood simply means that your period blood is fresh. Also, some people can get bright red period blood throughout their periods, and in the end, they can have a little brown blood at the end. While some can bleed bright red period blood throughout their period and both are completely normal.

3. Pink colour: Should you be bleeding pink colour? I know pink can be your favourite colour but, you should not be bleeding pink for your whole period. But a little pink colour of period blood at the start of the period can be normal. That is because your period blood can be mixed with the vaginal discharge. Hence can appear pink but, having the pink colour of period blood on your whole period is not okay. 

The pink colour can indicate health issues like:

• Low oestrogen
• Anaemia
• Less nutrition in your diet

Also, your health, your lifestyle, your dietary choices or hormonal changes can affect your periods and that is why it is very important to keep an eye on your overall health. It's your period blood and blood should not be in fancy colours like pink, blue, purple, or green. If you notice anything unusual or suspicious about your periods visit your doctor.
