Are you growing a beard, having hair on your body, and having many weird thoughts? Guess what? You are entering a glorious phase of your life called puberty. Puberty is a period in every adolescent’s life. Your body goes through a lot of changes; for instance, your hormones go haywire.
When puberty hits you, here are a few (massive) changes that you can notice.
PHYSICAL CHANGES
Breast Development: As breast tissue starts to grow, the breasts get rounder and fuller.
Menstrual Cycle: Menarche, or the start of the menstrual cycle, typically happens between the ages of 10 and 16.
Growth: These are characterized by a sudden, sharp rise in height that usually slows down when menstruation starts.
Body Hair: Greater growth of hair in places like the pubic area and underarms.
Skin: You can notice pimples and breakouts due to oil and sebum overproduction.
HORMONAL CHANGES
Increase in Estrogen: The development of secondary sexual characteristics, including the development of breasts, hip enlargement, and pubic and underarm hair, is largely attributed to the increase in estrogen during puberty in women.
Production of Progesterone: As adolescence advances, the ovaries begin to produce progesterone, a hormone that is essential for controlling the menstrual cycle and getting the body ready for a possible pregnancy.
The pituitary gland secretes luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone, thereby regulating the menstrual cycle and ovulation.
These changes are mostly identifiable, but what about the ones that are not? That is right—the emotional changes and feelings. Every teenager goes through a series of emotions, like sexual feelings, feelings of confidence, doubt, happiness, and sadness, all at the same time. You may want to look the prettiest in the room, but then your acne shows up and you feel sad. Kids more often than not have issues with their self-image.
Puberty is a time when we are the most confused, we want to group fast, and we think we know everything. People around us still think of us as kids, but then what about our bodies changing? This leads to confusion. When our body, hormones, skin, and feelings are all mixed up, we need to realize that we are growing up. The right kind of awareness and education can ease your pain and struggle. Just remember, puberty is going to be the most scary and exciting part of your life.
