We all cry. There isn't a single person on this planet who hasn't cried. But why do we cry? It could be physical or emotional pain, heartbreak, or a body ache. Sometimes our body releases pent-up emotions and feelings through the act of crying. Subconsciously, we might have stored some experiences that affected our minds and hearts. Crying out of nowhere can be a sign of realizing those feelings.

Tear production is correlated with hormones such as prolactin. People may cry more easily due to hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy. Reflex tears aid in shielding the eyes from allergens like smoke, dust, and onions. They lubricate the eyes and remove dangerous substances.

Why is it relieving?

Reflex tears help to clean your eyes of particles like dust and smoke. Your eyes are kept lubricated and protected from infection by constant tears. Tears of emotion may be very beneficial to health. While continuous tears are mostly composed of water, emotional tears also contain toxins and stress hormones. Researchers have theorized that crying flushes these things out of your system, though more research is needed.

Apart from these, there are many other benefits to crying your heart out. Studies reveal that people who cry live longer than those who don’t. One of the reasons might be that when we purge all our emotions through crying, we are not burdened by unresolved grief.

Crying also releases endorphins, which are our body’s painkillers and mood boosters. This is the reason you feel good and sleep better after a good crying session. Tears are a signal to other people that you need support or comfort, which can lead to social support. This has the calming effect of helping you feel less alone and more understood.

What would happen to your body if you repressed emotions and did not cry? You would notice a change immediately. You might feel irritated and overwhelmed. You might experience poor sleep due to anxiety. Holding back emotions can cause cardiovascular diseases or even cancer.

So, girls, cry your hearts out and express all that is buried deep within. Hiding is for those who fear vulnerability. Crying doesn’t make you weak or crazy.
