Imagine yourself in the middle of a very important meeting, travelling, with guests or you've just gone to bed after a very tiring day. Suddenly you feel an absolutely compelling desire to scratch or severe itching in vulva. You change your position, you rub yourself against the seat or you gently excuse yourself and rush to the washroom and then give yourself a cool jet spray of cold water. You were feeling a little relieved and soon you started getting those symptoms back in some time. This is known as the vaginal itch. Lets understand why it happens and what can be done about it?
The most common cause of vaginal itch is fungal infection. The vulva (the external part) and the internal passage are full of fungi and bacteria as they are required to keep that area healthy and moist with their juices. But if there is a change in that environment like if you are using a harsh soap, Dettol, Savlon or other chemicals, perfumed spray or cosmetics or you are having a viral fever or are on some antibiotics, you are actually changing their cosy home environment which further affects in the troubles faced by you.
It's not always fungal infection, it can also be some kind of allergy, skin irritation, skin condition or it can be a sexually transmitted infection.
Why does the itch keep coming back?
1. Wrong diagnosis
If you had a fungal infection doesn't necessarily mean you might have it again if you are having the vaginal itch. You should consult a doctor if it keeps coming back.
2. Inadequate treatment in terms of dose and duration of the medication.
3. Excessive cleaning
You need to have that fungus and bacteria to keep the area healthy and moist.
4. Dry Vagina
If your vagina is very dry the itch can keep coming back.
5. Use of tight undergarments
It's better to use loose undergarments or the cotton ones and always wash them thoroughly so that no detergent stays behind. It's also a good idea to dry them in bright sunlight.
6. Tight lowers or jeans
This can also lead to an unhealthy environment over there. If the itch keeps coming back it's a good idea to switch to a looser and airy bottom.
When do you need to see a doctor?
1. If the symptoms are bothering you continuously.
2. If the symptoms keep coming back.
3. If the itch is associated with a lot of discharge which can be curdy/yellowish/greenish or brownish.
4. If it is associated with painful sores or soreness around that area.
5. If there is a burning feeling or you can feel some lumps or ulcers.
6. If you are suspecting a sexually transmitted infection.
Can vaginal itch be a symptom of cancer?
The answer is yes, but fortunately very rarely. The alarming signs are burning, pain or discomfort while urinating, the symptoms are lasting longer and not responding to usual medications, if there is a pimple, sore, ulcer or a lump down there.
You should never self diagnose and self medicate. Always consult a gynaecologist for the right guidance.
