Having severe pain during sex?

Verified by Dr. Vaishali Sakpal Rane (MBBS, DGO Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Pain during sex is all too prevalent for some women. Dyspareunia is the term used in scientific medicine to describe painful sex. It refers to discomfort experienced prior to, during, or following intercourse. Your genital region might be affected. For instance, a lot of women who have this symptom describe discomfort as:

  • around and inside the vulva
  • The actual vaginal entrance is in the vestibule.
  • between the vagina and the anus in the perineum, a sensitive region of soft tissue
  • within the vagina

Some women claim to experience discomfort in their bladder, uterus, lower back, and/or pelvic region. It may be tough to enjoy sexual activity because of this pain. Because dyspareunia is frequently accompanied by mental distress and humiliation, diagnosing the disorder can be quite challenging for clinicians. When women admit to their doctors that they avoid sex because it hurts too much, they often experience embarrassment.

Other causes of painful sex include a number of the following:

  • vaginismus
  • vaginitis

  • Uncertain feelings about sex that might be caused by guilt, shame, fear, or anxiety
  • daily pressures related to job or money
  • fluctuating oestrogen levels or perimenopausal or menopausal atrophy
  • sensitivity to fragrant soaps or douches
