Does itching in vagina means I have vaginal infection

Verified by Dr. Vaishali Sakpal Rane (MBBS, DGO Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

The labia, clitoris, bladder entrance, and vaginal opening all belong to the vulva, which is the outer portion of female genitalia. The internal tube that connects the uterus to the vulva is known as the vagina.

Itching may occur inside the vagina or surrounding the vulva. The reason will determine the precise symptoms and therapies. When utilising items that irritate the delicate skin around the genitalia, minor vulvar itching frequently occurs. These may consist of:

  • menstrual pads
  • specific materials used in underwear
  • perfumed washing detergent was used to wash the underwear.
  • perfumed brands of creams, soaps, or lotions in particular
  • a latex condom
  • scents found in douches or deodorants
  • Once they cease taking these products, the person's itching will often disappear. Unscented and fragrance-free items are less likely to irritate people.

The use of products to clean the vagina is not advised by healthcare specialists. The vagina self-cleanse. Its capacity to self-clean can be hampered by douches and other vaginal cleaning solutions. Itching in this region can also be brought on by friction or chafing from undergarments, skin folds, or sexual activity. When the skin becomes irritated, refrain from scratching or rubbing it since doing so might make the irritation worse.

These are some common reasons for vaginal itching:

  • Infections like yeast infection and bacterial vaginosi
  • Sexually transmissible diseases (STDs), such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, or trichomoniasis
  • Irritation or allergic responses to clothes, condoms, detergents, soaps, and other products
  • Hormone changes brought on by the menopausal transition
  • Diabetes

A genital examination and inquiries regarding symptoms may be conducted by the doctor during a visit. The doctor usually identifies the source of the vaginal irritation based on this information. Not all vaginal itches are caused by yeast infections. It could be a yeast infection, but treating a fictitious yeast infection might make it more challenging to determine the true cause of vaginal irritation. Additionally, it could further disturb the delicate organismal balance in your vagina. If someone is having severe itching in the vagina , it is always better to take guidance from a doctor.
