Sexual dysfunction can be defined as the inability to perform sexually or the unwillingness to engage in any sexual activity. It is different from asexuality, which is a sexual orientation that describes a person who experiences little to no sexual attraction to others or less interest in sexual activity.

Asexuality cannot be treated using medicines or treatments, but sexual dysfunction can be cured by using medicines and counseling.

Several factors cause it. Sexual trauma, substance abuse, mental health issues, and even diabetes. The treatment of these disorders requires a multidisciplinary approach. There are a few types of disorders under this dysfunction.

Disorders

  1. Desire disorder: It is characterized by a persistent lack of sexual desire or interest in sexual activity. It can also manifest in a complete aversion to sexual contact.

  2. Arousal disorder: Men experience erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Women experience difficulty achieving adequate lubrication during sexual activity.

  3. Orgasm disorder: delayed or premature ejaculation can be experienced in this disorder.  Women can experience no orgasm even after sexual stimulation.

  4. Pain Disorder: pain experienced even after pepper lubrication during sexual intercourse. Vaginismus can be experienced by women, which is an involuntary contraction of the vaginal opening during sexual intercourse.

These disorders can cause depression or anxiety due to a lack of knowledge and awareness about them. People often shy away from seeking medical help in these matters and suffer undue pain and pressure all their lives. Women are usually able to reach out to a gynecologist with these problems, as they should. Men still see this as a taboo and hesitate to seek professional help.

Way out

Medical technology has seen many advancements in dealing with sexual dysfunction. At times, a mere change in medications can help treat the disorders, and sometimes there is a requirement for treatments and surgeries.

Substance abuse like alcohol and drugs is a big contributers to sexual dysfucntion and hence one must cut down and eventually stop doing it for a better health.

Counseling or therapy can also help trauma survivors to freely talk about their experiences and get rid of fears. Deep-rooted psychological issues can cause stress and anxiety, which can further deteriorate your sexual health. It is better to seek help than suffer silently.
