Signs of abnormal periods

Verified by Dr. Vaishali Sakpal Rane (MBBS, DGO Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Menstruation typically lasts between four and seven days for women. The average woman's period lasts 28 days, however typical menstrual bleeding can last from 21 to 35 days. If your menstrual cycle has changed in any way, you should maintain a precise record about when your period starts and finishes, as well as the volume of flow or whether you pass big blood clots. Keep records of any other signs, such as spotting between periods and severe cramps or pain during menstruation.

Here are some signs of abnormal periods:

Most women get their period once every 28 days, while some have more frequent cycles than others. There might be a few reasons why your periods abruptly cease. Pregnancy is one option, and a test result may swiftly and simply verify the answer.

If pregnancy is not the cause of your missed period, it might be due to PCOS, perimenopause, intensive activity, or major weight loss or increase.

Heavy bleeding

Period blood volume differs from one woman to the next. Menorrhagia is defined as an extremely strong menstrual flow if you soak one or even more pads or tampons in an hour. Along with the excessive bleeding, you may experience anaemia symptoms such as exhaustion or difficulty breathing. Heavy menstrual bleeding can be caused by a hormonal imbalance (PCOS), endometriosis, and a variety of other conditions.

 Scanty periods

Normal periods might last between two and seven days. Short periods may not be cause for concern, especially if they are regular for you. Using contraceptive pills might potentially cause your period to be shorter. Menopause can also cause disruptions in your usual periods. However, if your periods unexpectedly become substantially shorter, consult your doctor.

Intense cramps

Cramps are a typical feature of menstruation. They are triggered by muscle contraction that push the lining of your uterus out. Cramps usually begin a day or two preceding your flow and continue two to four days.

Cramping can be moderate or mild for some women. Others suffer from more severe cramps, known as dysmenorrhea. But if the cramps are really severe don’t wait and consult a gynaecologist.

Bleeding between periods

There are several reasons why you may experience spotting or bleeding between periods. Some factors, such as a switch in birth control, are minor. Others necessitate a visit to your doctor.

Severe mood swings

PMS is a mix of physical and mental symptoms that begin a week or so before your menstruation. PMS can also induce mood fluctuations in the weeks preceding a menstruation. Mood swings are abrupt, inexplicable mood changes. PMDD symptoms are comparable to PMS, except they are more intense and include emotions. It produces extreme mood fluctuations in certain people, interfering with their everyday lives.

Many people have become accustomed to modest difficulty around the time of their period, and exact difficulties vary between individuals. A person should consult a doctor if they have any odd or severe symptoms. These symptoms may point to an underlying health condition, such as a hormone imbalance. Remember that you should never ignore these signs and talk to a doctor for the right guidance.
