Dark circles are the appearance of darkened skin around the eyes. They can sometimes appear just because of the shadows cast by the puffy eyelids or the hollows under the eyes of some people.
A lot of time, many women face societal pressure to look good but, dark circles are usually common and normal and aren't a sign of any medical problem. Dark circles usually appear under the lower eyelids. They can make you look tired and can take a toll on your appearance. People usually think that dark circles appear because of lack of sleep but there are different reasons for dark circles.
Although dark circles can happen to person with any age, but they appear more commonly in:
- older adults
- people with dark skin complexion
- family history of dark circles
Fatigue
Fatigue, sleeping too less or sleeping too much can cause the appearance of dark circles. Sleep deprivation can make the skin under your eye look dark. It can also cause fluid accumulation under your eyes, causing puffy eyes. The shadow cast by puffy eyes can actually look like dark circles.
Ageing
Ageing is a natural part of life and it is a common reason for the appearance of dark circles under your eyes. The reason behind this is ageing causes skin to become thinner and less elastic which causes the dark blood vessels beneath your skin more visible. This can make your under eyes dark.
Eyestrain
You must have seen the appearance of dark or purplish under eyes after continuously staring at your mobile or computer screens. This is because staring at the screen for a long duration may cause strain which in turn enlarges the blood vessels and makes the skin around your eyes to darken.
Allergies
Allergies and dryness of eyes are another very common reason for dark circles under the eyes. These allergic reactions can cause dryness, itchiness, redness, and make you rub your eyes very often and can lead to dark circles overtime.
Sun overexposure
Although it’s not common, prolonged sun exposure can make your body produce melanin, which can cause pigmentation under the eyes.
Genetics
If someone in your family has dark circles, it can be inherited and cause the appearance as you age.
Certain diseases
Certain diseases might also cause hyperpigmentation as their side effect or symptom. For example anaemia can cause your skin to appear paler and cause dark circles.
Although dark circles are common and natural, you should visit a dermatologist to find the underlying cause. If you want you can discuss any possible treatment. Your dermatologist may recommend certain creams or therapies like laser therapy or chemical peels to decrease the darkness.
