Vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection. In this, there is an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida. Candida is usually present in the vagina without causing any symptoms. The hormones in vaginal secretions and the reasonable' vaginal bacteria keep this fungus under control. The minute the natural balance in the vagina gets upset, Candida multiplies, leading to yeast infection.
Yeast infection during pregnancy:
A woman's body goes through so many changes during pregnancy, and it becomes difficult for her to keep up with the chemical change in the vagina. There is an increase in the level of estrogen hormone, which leads to a
change in the pH balance in the vagina. Leading to yeast infection or candidiasis.
Causes of yeast infection during pregnancy:
- Recently taken courses of antibiotics or steroid medicines can lead to a change in the balance of yeast and bacteria in the vagina.
- Women suffering from diabetes with uncontrolled sugar levels
- Douching or usage of vaginal sprays
- Women suffering from a weak immune system caused by diseases like HIV
- Using contraceptives containing estrogen
- Through sexual contact, if the partner is infected
Symptoms of yeast infection during pregnancy:
- There is itching in the vagina &vulva
- There is burning while urinating
- There is a rash on the vulva.
- There is a white, thick vaginal discharge resembling cottage cheese
Prevention of yeast infection during pregnancy:
- Keeping the vaginal area dry
- Avoid douching as it can upset the balance in the vagina. In late pregnancy douching can also lead breaking of the water bag.
- Wear cotton underwear and no tight pantyhose and let the vagina breathe
- Avoid the use of scented toilet paper, feminine sprays, bubble bath, and sanitary pads .
- Take a shower immediately after a swim and change clothes
- Diet should include yogurt for Lactobacillus
- Sugar intake should be limited
- One should wipe from front to back after using the loo
Treatment of yeast infection during pregnancy:
The infection is treated with anti fungal medication but it’s not advised to take any medications, even over the counter medications before talking to a doctor.
It takes 10-14 days to get relief or completely clear up the infection while one is pregnant. After the infection has cleared up and any sores have not healed, ones should use a starch-free drying powder, or Nystatin powder to prevent a recurring infection.
