What is a hymen actually? Does it define virginity?

Verified by Dr. Vaishali Sakpal Rane (MBBS, DGO Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

A hymen is defined as a "small patch of membranous tissue covering the vaginal entrance." Most people with a vagina from birth have a hymen, which is a tissue collar at the opening of the vagina. Hymens, like all other parts of the body, are unique. While hymens occur in a range of forms, the most common being a half moon, they also come in a variety of sizes. In certain cases, a woman is born without one! During your menstruation, this permits blood to readily flow out of your vagina.

"Your hymen may not even be present the first time you have vaginal intercourse for a variety of reasons," such as "vigorous exercise, tampons, menstrual cups." If it remains, though, "it may cause temporary bleeding or pain."

Does having a stretched hymen indicate that you are not a virgin?

Nope! Your hymen "may be ruptured without knowing," as previously indicated, through a variety of non-sex-related activities. Therefore, the hymen cannot be used as an accurate indicator of virginity. Furthermore, each hymen is unique. Since some people can be born with a hymen that is half-moon shaped and others might be born with one that is more spread out, it is impossible to draw any conclusions about a person based on the condition of their hymen. The discomfort and blood associated with your first vaginal intercourse are determined by your hymen. Many women bleed during their first time of vaginal intercourse because of the tearing or stretching of hymen. But that doesn't mean that every women will bleed.

Try not to be overly concerned with what others may do. The readiness of both you and your partner for sex should come first, regardless of when you lose your virginity. If you have sex solely to fit in, it won't be a pleasant experience. It's best to avoid having sex unless you're completely ready.
