Urine colour depends upon various things such as food products, water intake, medications and health conditions and bleeding. Normal colour of urine is pale yellow, clear and transparent. Normal urine is colourless.
Symptoms:-
- Foods such as beetroot and berries affect the colour of urine and make it red or pink.
- Medicines change the urine colour to orange, green or blue.
- The colour of urine depends on the amount of daily water intake. Drinking less water turns the colour of urine yellow whereas staying hydrated keeps the colour of urine clear.
- Urinary Tract Infection makes the urine milky white.
- Diseases like kidney stones, cancers, etc turn the urine colour into red due to the presence of blood in it.
- Certain medicines turn the urine colour orange.
Various normal and abnormal urine colours can be :-
- Clear, colourless or transparent
- Pale or dark yellow
- Cloudy white
- Green
- Orange
- Dark Brown or cola
- Red
- Blue
Different urine colours have different causes which are as follows:-
- Clear, colourless or transparent colour urine:-
- A healthy person has transparent or colourless urine. A clear urine is a sign of the person being fit and normal. Such a person has a good diet.
- Cloudy or murky urine:-
- It is caused by health problems like Urinary Tract Infections or kidney stones, etc.
- Age factor can be a reason. Bladder and kidney tumours which are common in old people can cause blood in urine. Usually, males at or above sixty years get blood in their urine due to the increased prostate gland.
- Family history is also responsible. If any of the blood relatives such as parents, siblings or other family members have any kidney diseases or kidney stones then that person might also get them and these problems may be causes leading to blood in urine.
- Anyone who exercises might have blood in urine but people doing hard exercises are at higher risk.
- Dark brown or cola coloured urine:-
- Eating food products such as aloe vera might turn the colour of the urine to brown or cola colour.
- Some medicines can also make the colour of the urine dark.
- Health problems such as liver or kidney disorders, bleeding due to haemorrhage, effect on skin and nervous system due to porphyria can also turn the colour of urine brown.
- Muscle injury due to extreme exercises can lead to kidney damage which can turn urine into cola colour.
- Blue or green coloured urine:-
- Food dyes can turn the urine green whereas dyes used in tests for kidney and bladder can turn it into blue.
- Medicines such as pain killers can turn the urine colour into blue.
- It can also be a sign of arthritis.
- A rare disease, called Familial benign hypercalcemia can also cause blue urine in children.
- Urinary tract infections caused by a certain type of bacteria can cause the urine colour to be green.
3. Orange coloured urine:-
- Medicines used for treating constipation, swelling, irritation or cancer can cause the urine to be orange.
- Vitamins like A and B12 are also responsible for the orange colour of the urine.
- Liver or bile duct problems can lead to orange urine.
- Dehydration can also cause orange urine.
4. Red or Pink coloured urine:-
- Blood due to certain health problems can cause red or pink urine.
- Certain medicines can turn urine to red or pink colour.
- Hard exercises can also be responsible.
- Coloured food products such as beet, etc. can cause red or pink urine.
