What is Preventive Chemotherapy that the Princess is currently on?

Following the abdominal surgery, Princess Kate endured a lengthy recovery period before she was fit to commence chemotherapy for her cancer. Preventive chemotherapy, as recommended by Catherine's medical team, is a proactive treatment aimed at reducing the risk of cancer recurrence following surgery. This form of chemotherapy involves administering medication to eradicate any remaining cancer cells and minimize the likelihood of disease resurgence. The frequency and dosage of preventive chemotherapy vary based on factors such as the type and progression of cancer.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is a complex disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. These abnormal cells can form tumours or invade surrounding tissues, interfering with the normal functioning of organs and systems. Cancer can occur in any part of the body and can arise from various factors, including genetic predisposition, environmental exposures, lifestyle choices, and infections.

What is Metastasis?

The development of cancer involves a series of genetic mutations that disrupt the mechanisms controlling cell growth, division, and death. Left unchecked, cancer cells can proliferate rapidly, leading to the formation of malignant tumours and potentially spreading to other parts of the body through a process called metastasis. Despite significant advances in research and treatment, cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

What is the global burden of Cancer?

According to the World Health Organisation, in 2022, approximately 20 million new cases of cancer were reported, leading to around 9.7 million fatalities. Around 53.5 million individuals were estimated to be living within five years after their cancer diagnosis. Statistics reveal that about one in every five individuals will face cancer at some point in their lives. Notably, the disease claims the lives of about 1 in 9 men and 1 in 12 women globally. Such is the disastrous effect of this malignancy with only a few innovative cures discovered yet.
