Dr. Rick Ferraro, a general cardiology fellow at Johns Hopkins Medicine, described the findings as a "wake-up call," emphasizing the need for further research to explore the correlation between microplastics and cardiovascular events.

Surprisingly, polyethene microplastics were detected in nearly 60% of patients, with polyvinyl chloride microplastics present in about 12% of cases. Following the surgery, patients with microplastics in their arterial plaque were found to be 4.5 times more likely to experience severe cardiovascular events over an average follow-up period of 34 months. However, it's important to note that the study does not establish causation, leaving room for further investigation into the health effects of microplastics.

Dr. Aaron Aday, director of vascular medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, emphasized the concerning implications of the findings, particularly for patients already at higher risk due to significant carotid plaque. 

What are Microplastics?
