There are a lot many things that change post-pregnancy but one big change that occurs is the production of breastmilk. While it might take a little time for the new moms to get used to it, it is also important to know about how it works. Some women might normally produce breast milk to feed their babies while some might face certain issues regarding the same. With a little bit of information and tips you can prepare yourself to face all the potential challenges. Here are 5 tips that might affect your breastmilk production:

Factors affecting breast milk production:

  1. Breast Reduction: if someone undergoes breast reduction surgery, they might have to undergo the removal of their tissues and ducts that are responsible for producing milk. This can have a potential impact on the ways that breastmilk is produced after the parts are removed and reattached.
  2. Breast Cancer: when an woman undergoes the surgeries or radiations for cancer treatment, they may face structural issues which make it difficult and painful to feed. This is one big reason that may affect the amount and quality of the breastmilk produced.
  3. Postpartum Hemorrhage: the stress and nausea that may come after a heavy and painful delivery is quiet a problem. If during labor, the woman faces a trauma, it might certainly change the amount of milk production.
  4. Hypothyroidism: anyone who has suffers with thyroid might also face challenges regarding the release of hormones such as prolactin and oxytocin. Low thyroid hormone levels is one of the prime reasons which may affect lactation. It not only affects lactation but inversely affects your skin, hair, appetite, and depression.
  5. Work and Stress: working and stress does not cut off the milk production in women but it negatively impacts it. Stress has always had an adverse effect on the hormones and that is ultimately responsible for the milk production. Working may also avoid new moms from taking care of themselves postpartum which may also hamper the breastmilk.

When there is a problem there is always a way to tackle with it. You can follow certain ways to replenish the breastmilk supply but by taking an advice by your gynaecologist.

  1. Pump out a little extra milk after every feeding session which increases the demand of milk and hence increases the production of milk. Necessity drives production.
  2. Eating and consuming your liquids after every breastfeeding session helps you produce more milk. Increasing the amount and number of times you pump the milk, improves the quality and quantity.
  3. Consuming foods which improve the production of milk like supplement formulas can help you solve the lactation related problems.

If these issues related to breastmilk are not solved they might also negatively hamper the growth of the child and the mom as well. Any one who has to deal with such a problem must consider asking their doctors before taking a step.
